Green Initiatives

The Grand Hyatt Kaua`i Resort and Spa is committed to reducing our impact on the environment by conserving natural resources and reducing waste.  In order to accomplish this, we recently replaced nearly 7,000 fluorescent bulbs with LED's for a 70% increase in lighting efficiency.  We also offer a comprehensive recycling program, with recycling bins offered throughout the property as well as in each guestroom and every office workspace.  All glass, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper and cardboard products used by the hotel are recycled, and 100% of green waste is utilized by a local nursery for compost.  Currently, we divert an average of 13 tons of recyclables each month from the island’s landfill!  Leading the industry in Hawaii, we are one of two resorts harnessing the sun for energy.  Our solar photovoltaic covered carport, the only one in the State, will produce 430,000 kWh per year.

To further reduce our environmental impact, all guestrooms feature sink aerators and Toto®low-flow showerheads and  toilets.  We offer a towel and linen reuse program throughout the hotel, and our catering services substitute china and cloth napkins for disposable paper products.  Waste cooking oil is collected from our restaurants and processed into bio-diesel fuel, food scraps are collected and made into feed by a local pig farmer, and usable hotel items such as mattresses, art, furniture, dishes, etc. are sold in fundraisers for local charities.  Utilizing exciting technology, the heat produced by our air conditioning system is used to heat the water for our guestrooms and swimming pools.
